F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin
Game Description
F.E.A.R. 2 seems like a true proponent of beautiful action. Slowing the action down with the slow-mo mode and watching bullet tracers and enemies vaulting – albeit slowly – through the air are undeniable joys that seem to be visually improved in the sequel. One of our major gripes with Monolith’s previous effort was the repetitive nature of the environments, but even here, they seem to have come up with a plan. Given what we’ve seen in trailers and screenshots, F.E.A.R. 2 seems to house a far greater variety of locales and while the weapons don’t seem particularly original, there are sure to be some surprises.
Quite apart from the weapons is a Robocop-style mech-warrior romp that you’ll get to engage in. Given Monolith’s Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, perhaps it isn’t surprising that they’ve found a way to squeeze this sort of gameplay into their newest creation. Whether it’ll fit the F.E.A.R. 2 theme remains to be seen, but lashings of gun-toting action are sure to ensue.
Despite a forgettable multiplayer mode in the original F.E.A.R., Monolith is going out of their way to expand this mode and ensure that it caters for online-centric players as well. Currently there are four different game modes known about: Armored Front, Blitz, Failsafe and your standard Deathmatch. Failsafe is possibly the most interesting of the four as it involves bomb-planting and plenty of hairy defuse work, but most importantly, it’s an entirely new notch on F.E.A.R.’s multiplayer belt. Sixteen players can battle it out online at any time and given the claustrophobic nature of F.E.A.R. 2’s maps, you can expect a hefty dose of close-up combat.
With the additions to the multiplayer stable and a new, exciting single player campaign in the works, F.E.A.R. 2 looks like a definite success story. Moreover, we’re told that it will be scarier than its brother, which, all things considered, never ramped up the frights as much as we’d hoped. Considering what we’ve seen, F.E.A.R. 2 looks like it’ll successfully build on F.E.A.R.’s solid foundation while offering something genuinely new. Expect our review to coincide with its February 2009 release date.
